IRON MAIDEN's 'The Final Frontier' Cracks U.S. Top 5 - Aug. 25, 2010
IRON MAIDEN's new album, "The Final Frontier", sold 63,000 copies in the
United States in its first week of release to enter The Billboard 200
chart at position No. 4.
IRON MAIDEN's previous album, 2006's "A Matter Of Life And Death",
opened with 56,000 units to land at No. 9. This was a notable increase
from the 40,000 first-week tally registered by its predecessor, 2003's
"Dance of Death" (which debuted at No. 18 on The Billboard 200 chart),
and that of "Brave New World", which moved 38,000 copies in June 2000 to
land at No. 39 on The Billboard 200 chart.
"The Final Frontier" has registered the following first-week chart
positions so far:
Norway: #1
Finland: #1
United Kingdom: #1
Sweden: #1
Switzerland: #1
Canada: #1
Netherlands: #2
Australia: #2
Ireland: #3
USA: #4
Belgium: #6
"The Final Frontier" is IRON MAIDEN's fourth U.K. No. 1 album.

Interesting, given that it's in the US where Maiden has the 'nostalgy act'
stigma the most and where their new songs are most poorly received.

Though, the #4 position is perhaps more indicative of the overall decline
of USian music industry, rather than huge surge in popularity of Iron Maiden.

I suspect you are more right than wrong.

TFF has also cracked #1 on it's first entry in the New Zealand chart,
that must be the first time they've had a #1 album here I think.

(need to then change the setting to be albums rather than singles)

You are right in the sense that 63,000 units sold in years/decades past
would not have garnered such a high chart position, but for that week in
August 2010, every one was dealing with the same handicap, and Maiden
parlayed it into the fourth best selling album in the country. I know
they're not going to go platinum or any thing, but it is a small "little
victory" that they deserve some kudos for.

Also, if you take note of the numbers from the last four albums, each
one has sold more than the last. Even though the sales aren't growing in
leaps and bounds, they are INCREASING, and that is an industry defying
trend.
